Plan to join a First Day Hike

What better way to welcome in the new year than with fresh air and the peacefulness of the great outdoors?

On Jan. 1, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is hosting its annual First Day Hikes celebrations at state parks, historic sites, natural areas, canal trails, environmental education centers and other public lands across New York State.

Whether you are looking to stroll along a frozen beachy coastline or to explore a snowy wooded trail, there is a guided hike for you. We have opportunities from Long Island all the way up to Niagara Falls.

The 15th annual event includes options for hikes ranging from self-guided treks to staff- or volunteer-led hikes, with some locations offering multiple options allowing people the time and space to enjoy nature’s winter wonders.

The walks and hikes are family-friendly and typically range from one to five miles depending on the location and conditions.

Many New Yorkers thrive in winter and are eager for falling temperatures and consistent snowfalls. To these hardy adventurers, a few extra layers of gear combined with the snowy terrain of parklands is a winning recipe for fitness, togetherness and outdoor fun. If you’ve never been on a First Day Hike, save the date and we’ll see you out there!

Find a hike near you by visiting https://parks.ny.gov/events/first-day-hikes.

Bring your friends, family and neighbors to one of our many participating host sites to kick off your wellness goals on the first day of 2026.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Many of our hikes are led by State Parks staff or members of our friends groups. Often, they can be helpful guides for sharing insights on local history and wildlife as you walk. Ask questions if you have them.
  • Don’t forget to dress in warm layers, wear sturdy footwear and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Keep an eye on the Parks Explorer app for updates on weather conditions that could affect your hike.
  • Many of our hikes require registration so be sure to check beforehand.
  • Snap some photos of your hike and tag us on our social platforms. We’d love to see your First Day Hike fun.

Happy New Year from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.
